- Make sure you ask your captain about his boat
- Get a good understanding on the type and condition of his boat. You also want to know how the
boat is laid out. Make sure the cockpit is covered so you are protected against foul weather and
also has plenty of room so you can move around safely
- If the boat has a cabin, you can store your gear safely and eliminate clutter in the cockpit. In the
case of an illness a cabin allows a place for you to lie down or get out of foul weather. You should
also ask if the boat has a head (toilet)?
- Ask if you can see the boat before booking your charter
Tips for booking a Charter

- Make sure you are dealing with a captain that puts your safety first and uses good judgment
when it comes to current or changing weather conditions and safe navigation practices. There is
no need to leave the dock in unsafe weather conditions.
- Discuss any concerns you may have with your captain and get references whenever possible.
- When discussing your trip, try to get good feel for the captain’s personality by asking plenty of
questions. A captain with a good personality will enhance your experience.
- If you’re uncomfortable with a captain, consider booking your trip with another captain.
Remember that once you are on the water, it’s to late to change your mind!
- Ask what the captain expects from you as a customer and how much he is willing to let you get
involved with the overall experience. Every captain is different and a little communication in
advance can help ensure a pleasant experience

Tips for selecting a Captain

When selecting a charter you should give strong consideration to the Captain you select and
the investment (Boat & Equipment) he or she has made to provide safe and comfortable outing
- Book your trip as far in advance as possible - Weekends & Prime Time fill up fast !
- Each area has their prime time for each species of fish. Try to book your trip as close to this prime
time as possible
- Make certain you talk to the Captain and ask plenty of questions prior to booking your trip. Make
sure you know what he provides so you are not disappointed !!
- Call several Captains, have them send you their brochures or review their web page for more
specific details
- Ask about the Captain's boat and the type of trip (trolling or drift fishing) he is providing
- Ask how much the captain will let you get involved in the overall experience. You don’t want to get
on the water only to find out that your expectations are different that your captain’s
- If you are booking a Scenic Cruises, make sure you understand what you will see and the effect
weather may have on your trip.
